Self-organization in vowel systems
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents a computer simulation of the emergence of vowel systems in a population of agents. The agents (small computer programs that operate autonomously) are equipped with a realistic articulatory synthesizer, a model of human perception and the ability to imitate and learn sounds they hear. It is shown that due to the interactions between the agents and due to self-organization, realistic vowel repertoires emerge. This happens under a large number of di!erent parameter settings and therefore seems to be a very robust phenomenon. The emerged vowel systems show remarkable similarities with the vowel systems found in human languages. It is argued that self-organization probably plays an important role in determining the vowel inventories of human languages and that innate predispositions are probably not necessary to explain the universal tendencies of human vowel systems. Self-organization in Sound Systems: a Model of Sound Strings Processing Agents
Several typological universals of sound systems of human language are assumed to be a result of self-organization in a population’s communication performance. This has been shown for human vowel system in diverse studies (c.f. de Boer, 2000b; Jäger, 2008). In these studies computational models were designed of agents communicating with single vowel sounds. In our study we present a computationa...
متن کاملLearning Vowels Using Self-Organization
This paper describes research that investigates the structure of human vowel systems through individual learning and self-organization. A population of agents that have to learn to imitate each other has been implemented. The agents can interact with each other through so-called imitation games: structured exchanges of sounds from which they can learn how to improve their repertoire of sounds. ...
متن کاملEvolution and self-organisation in vowel systems'
This paper describes computer simulations that investigate the role of selforganisation in explaining the universals of human vowel systems. It has been observed that human vowel systems show remarkable regularities, and that these regularities optimise acoustic distinctiveness and are therefore adaptive for good communication. Traditionally, universals have been explained as the result of inna...
متن کاملEmbodiment and Self-organization of Human Categories: A Case Study for Speech
The paper considers explanations for the kinds of categories that have been found to be involved in human behavior. It insists that embodiment not only plays an important role in shaping these categories, but also that the collective dynamics generated by social interaction is of equal importance. A case study is developed for speech sounds. We show through computer simulations how a group of a...
متن کاملInvestigating the Emergence of Speech Sounds
This paper presents a system that simulates the emergence of realistic vowel systems in a population of agents that try to imitate each other as well as possible. The agents start with no knowledge of the sound system at all. Although none of the agents has a global view of the language, and none of the agents does explicit optimization, a coherent vowel system emerges that happens to be optima...
